To Syzygy or Not To Syzygy, that is the question.

Okay, this article is about “alignment” but syzygy just feels so much more interesting.

In astronomy, a syzygy is the alignment of three or more celestial bodies. When we hear the saying “the planets have aligned” we think readily of good things happening, of everything going perfectly.

Alignment is at the center of positive things all around us, from the celestial syzygy to business priorities to essence of our body and souls.

In yoga for instance, the term “alignment” is used to mean the precise way in which the body should be positioned in each pose in order to obtain the maximum benefit and avoid injury. No matter what pose is chosen, improvements in alignment improve the benefits and decrease the risks.

The same is true for Tai Chi where training emphasizes body alignment and proper posture to reduce stress on the components of the spine.

There is the story about a Tae Kwon Do black belt who could expertly break multiple sets of 2 ¾ inch pine boards with her feet, hands or even her forehead. In class one day, without thinking it through, the black belt handed her boardholder two boards at once – but one of the board’s grain was vertical and one of the board’s grain was horizontal. When she kicked those boards, they didn’t move. It was like kicking a tree trunk. The instructor said “You can’t break through if you don’t have alignment”.

Try reading that same sentence again:

Alignment is all around us. Imagine if this article were not aligned. Although the same words would all be there, there would be unnecessary strain in trying to make sense of what was being said.

Alignment in everything that we see and do simply makes things easier and any effort expended is more effective.

The same is true in our businesses. Strong goal alignment and goal visibility allows for quicker execution of company strategy by allowing everyone to “see” what needs to get done and focus on the task at hand. Lack of alignment means ineffective use of resources across projects and initiative. With alignment, leaders can focus their team on the company’s most important goals and reduce task redundancy throughout their team while employees will have a greater understanding of how their efforts will serve the business goals.

Vision, goal and task alignment increases morale and is an essential ingredient to a high performing team.

Most of us have never experienced the rush of breaking through multiple sets of 2 3/4 inch thick pine boards. Nor do we possess the power to align planets. We do however have the ability to ensure we create alignment in our businesses.

We can create that alignment – that syzygy – through clear, concise, visible planning and communication. To do that, we must ensure we have a vision of where we want to take our business that resonates strongly with everyone on the team. We need to ensure goals are understood and we need to be clear about priorities and passionate about the outcome.
